Guest: Rose Auslander

Mutterland

Mein Vaterland ist tot
sie haben es begraben
im Feuer

Ich lebe
in meinem Mutterland

the complexity of Auslander’s poem is not easy to grasp even for the German speaker: In German there is no such thing as motherland. Fatherland, that for which patriotism was possible to have – is dead. And: Auslander’s relationship with her mother was one she described as unrequited love. Yet she returned and stayed in the ghetto with her mother… Home is in the poetry, I believe. And,the older she gets the shorter and more zen-like the verses turn out.
