baker

no denying: I want some of those bakers’ goods

not all just the juicy sticky ones

some of those bakers’ goods

the warm yeasty smell draws

me in and I want some of

those bakers’ goods

the sweet and sticky ones

taking me back to the

village oven when I

was 5 and my day care mom

took me: intoxicating smell

of baking bread;

and Maxim Gorki

whose stories

sleeping

in the bakery basement

loving life* I chewed

in my twenties

a cure for melancholy

===

  • from decades ago, I remember two biographical pieces of info about Maxim Gorki – that he attempted suicide once and found it difficult to forgive himself for that; secondly and chronologically unrelated as I remember it, he belonged to a group called ‘godseekers’.

  1. A wonderful segue from allegory to memory… “loving life* I chewed/in my twenties/a cure for melancholy” very good!

  2. literary homeopathy for me 😊
