flat-foot travelling back from town

On the train back from town to what is now my semi-ermanent retreat, I am thinking of the difference in the presentation of the Local Authority in my new place. I am reminded of a researcher from Chile at Birmingham Uni whom I met in 2011. She said some of the authoritarian structures in the UK reminded her of Chile under the previous government.

And yet, it is a beautiful world, as the Desiderata says. As I look out of the train window, we are passing a level crossing, sheep on the field and a couple of men waiting at the barrier.

Is it possible to hold despair  about one and joy about the other at the same time, I wonder?
