Sachsenhausen, Mar 1979

Without notice,

touched by a moment’s  presence

in the midst of darkness

width in me unfolded

like a rose in bloom:

nothing to do – but honour

the pain of the dead,

Once there,

I saw both guards

east and west on the same platform

forever connected.

The same evening,

my open space, my own,

and a knowing certainty –

no more retreating

the world.
